Why I Created This Report...

This past week I was left stranded in Texas when our power shut off for 34 hours in single digit weather, with our water shutting down to a mere trickle. It wasn't the snow that we couldn't survive, but the lack of power. Our homes aren't built for winter weather, so our home was almost in the 40s inside. We could see our breath. Some neighbors' homes were 14 degrees indoors.

Pair this with the fact that we were told to boil snow to to use as water (with no power, and no heat source), and many began to panic. You couldn't even drive to the store to try to buy water because our state doesn't winterize the roads, so they're impassable. We were all stuck. And scared.

The pandemic had many of us prepared with a few food items, plenty of toilet paper and hand sanitizer, but water and warmth? It was something we took for granted here. I saw neighbors vowing to never let this happen to them again (see image below) and I myself am expecting supplies to start arriving to ensure my family is never left in such circumstances again.

I can't tell you how it feels to see your kids shivering, hear your son tell you he and his wife weren't prepared with many non cook foods along with no bottled water, knowing you can't get to him, and wonder how long it'll take for everything to come back on.

One moment, when my daughter left the room, I had a quick cry because I felt like I'd failed them. We were miserably cold. The annoying thing is, I knew what should be done, but I shrugged it off being in Texas. So step up and help others avoid these mistakes, too. We are happily looking at blog reviews to find things we want to buy.
